FAQs - Body Positivity
WHAT IS BODY POSITIVITY?
Body positivity is the right to self-love for people with marginalized bodies (such as fat, transgender, disabled, and BIPOC) and not just privileged bodies (such as thin, cisgender, non-disabled, and white).
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Our society gives privilege to thin, cisgender, white people and discriminates against bodies that don’t match those categories. The body positivity movement needs to be inclusive of marginalized people as well.
HOW IS IT RELEVANT TO ALTERNATIVE FASHION?
Representation of marginalized bodies is low and discrimination against them remains high in the alternative fashion community. Participants should recognize that many alternative fashion brands are not inclusive of all people in their sizing, offerings, and model choices.
